She watched her father take his last breath.
For months, he had been bedridden and seriously ill. The family could not afford the medical bills needed to seek proper healthcare, leaving him to suffer at home.
“I watched my father getting sick. He was bedridden for months. He couldn’t even go to the hospital because of the bills,” she recalled.
His prolonged illness disrupted every aspect of family life. Shylette was unable to attend kindergarten and only started school at the age of seven.
For many children, such an experience could have led to hopelessness.
For Shylette, it became the moment that shaped her destiny.
As she watched her father suffer without access to medical care, she made a promise to herself—a promise that would guide every step of her life.
She would become a doctor.

“So, I told myself that I wanted to do medicine, reach out to people and help them. I believe that’s where God wants me to be and that is where I can help my family members and the community at large.”
