“Healing begins the moment we choose courage over silence.” — Dr. Portia Monnapula-Mazabane

A Woman Driven by Purpose

Behind every remarkable professional is a story of courage, perseverance, and purpose. For Dr. Portia Monnapula-Mazabane, becoming one of South Africa’s respected Clinical Psychologists was never simply about earning qualifications or building a successful career. It was about answering a calling—to restore hope, heal emotional wounds, and help people rediscover the strength they often forget they possess.

Today, Dr. Portia is recognised as a respected Clinical Psychologist, researcher, mental health advocate, public speaker, and thought leader. Through her clinical practice, research, leadership, and public education, she continues to transform lives while helping break the stigma surrounding mental illness in South Africa and beyond.

Early Life: A Journey Shaped by Resilience, Compassion, and Purpose

Every remarkable journey has defining moments that shape a person’s purpose. For Dr. Portia, those moments began long before she entered lecture halls, research laboratories, or therapy rooms.

Raised in South Africa, she experienced both love and profound loss at an early age. After losing her mother during childhood, she was raised by her father, whose resilience, discipline, faith, and unwavering dedication became the foundation upon which she built her own life. Through his example, she learned that adversity does not have to define one’s future. Instead, it can become the catalyst for strength, compassion, and purpose.

Growing up without her mother taught her empathy at an early age. She understood what it meant to grieve, to adapt, and to find hope during life’s most difficult moments. Those experiences would later become invaluable in her work as a psychologist, enabling her to connect deeply with people experiencing trauma, grief, depression, anxiety, and emotional pain.

As a young student, Dr. Portia developed an enduring fascination with human behaviour and emotional wellbeing. She wanted to understand why people suffer, how they heal, and how compassionate support could transform lives. That curiosity evolved into a lifelong commitment to psychology and mental healthcare.

Her story reminds us that some of the greatest healers are those who have first learned how to navigate their own life’s challenges with courage and resilience.

The Unbreakable Bond of Sisterhood

An important part of Dr. Portia’s journey has been the lifelong support of her twin sister, Pat K. Monnapula.

From childhood, the sisters shared dreams, encouraged one another through challenges, and celebrated every milestone together. Their relationship was strengthened by resilience, mutual respect, and a shared belief that education would open doors to opportunities beyond anything they could have imagined.

Although they chose different careers, they remained united by the same commitment to excellence and service.

While Dr. Portia dedicated her life to improving mental health and emotional wellbeing, Pat K. Monnapula built an impressive career in Information and Communication Technology (ICT). With leadership experience across the telecommunications and technology sectors, she currently serves in a leadership role at Microsoft, contributing to digital transformation and innovation across Africa.

Together, they represent two remarkable examples of African women leading with purpose—one transforming lives through psychology, the other empowering societies through technology.

Their story demonstrates that success is not about competing with one another, but about encouraging each other to become the very best versions of themselves.

Academic Excellence Built Through Determination

Dr. Portia’s pursuit of excellence reflects a lifelong commitment to learning.

She earned a Bachelor of Social Science from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, followed by an Honours Degree in Psychology and a Master’s Degree in Clinical Psychology from North-West University.

Determined to deepen her contribution to psychology, she completed a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Psychology at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, where her research focused on mental health stigma—one of the most pressing challenges facing individuals living with mental illness.

Committed to lifelong learning, she further completed an Advanced Diploma in Neuroscience through King’s College London, broadening her understanding of the relationship between brain function, behaviour, and psychological wellbeing.

Her academic journey also includes qualifications in Public Management and Development, reflecting her passion for leadership, governance, and organisational development.

For Dr. Portia, education has never been about collecting qualifications—it has always been about equipping herself to serve others with excellence, compassion, and integrity.

A Distinguished Professional Journey

Before becoming a Clinical Psychologist, Dr. Portia spent more than 12 years serving in senior management positions within South Africa’s public sector, where she gained valuable experience in leadership, organisational development, policy implementation, and people management.

She later expanded her expertise into the private sector as a Diversity Specialist, helping organisations foster inclusive, respectful, and psychologically healthy workplaces.

These experiences gave her unique insight into workplace stress, burnout, leadership challenges, organisational culture, and employee wellbeing—knowledge that continues to enrich her work as a psychologist.

Eventually, she chose to pursue what she believes is her life’s calling: helping people heal emotionally, psychologically, and personally.

Today, based in Umhlanga, Durban, Dr. Portia provides evidence-based psychotherapy to adolescents, adults, couples, and families facing a broad range of emotional and psychological challenges.

Her specialist interests include anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, trauma, grief, workplace stress, burnout, family conflict, relationship challenges, adjustment disorders, postnatal depression, and psychological assessments.
